IFA System

The Benjamin Eye Institute has invested in the IFA system which enables us to keep all our medical records paperless. This system guarantees that your medical records will never be lost or misplaced and are always up to date.

SLT Laser

SLT (Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty) is a safe and simple in-office laser treatment that effectively reduces the pressure in the eye for most patients with glaucoma.

The SLT mechanism of effect does not rely on medicines, instead, it uses an advanced laser system to target only specific cells of the eye-those containing melanin, a natural pigment. This allows for only these cells to be affected, leaving surrounding tissue intact. As a result, your body's own healing response helps lower the pressure in your eye.

Benefits of SLT:

   •   SLT is not associated with systemic side effects or the compliance and cost issues of medications.
   •   SLT utilizes selective photothermolysis to target only specific cells, leaving the surrounding tissue intact.
   •   SLT stimulates the body's natural mechanisms to enhance outflow of the fluid in your eye.
   •   SLT therapy is reimbursed by Medicare and many other insurance providers, which minimizes your out-of-pocket expenses.

IOL Master

In cataract surgery or other lens-replacement procedures, vision is improved by replacing the eye's natural lens with an intra-ocular lens (IOL). IOLs come in different powers and sizes to compensate for each patient's individual needs.

For best vision after cataract surgery, precise measurements must be taken to determine which IOL to implant. The IOL Master is a high-precision instrument revolutionizing all previous techniques and setting a new standard for IOL calculations, called optical biometry.

Optical biometry using the IOL Master does not subject our patients to any discomfort. No local anesthesia is required and there is no risk associated with taking the measurements.

Why we've invested in the IOL Master:

   •   The difference between good vision and great vision after cataract surgery can be attributed to the diagnostic technology used to calculate the appropriate IOL. This technology provides our patients with the opportunity for the best possible visual outcome.
   •   The IOL Master is a great advancement in IOL calculation because it uses very short light waves to measure axial length instead of much longer ultrasound waves, resulting in about three times the accuracy of ultrasound devices.
   •   The risk of confusing right and left eye measurements is eliminated with this technology because the IOL Master automatically detects the right or left eye while taking the measurement.
   •   Axis length, corneal diameter, corneal radii and anterior-chamber depth of the eye are measured with the IOL Master. However, we actually get slightly more accurate and repeatable measurements using a manual ophthalmometer to measure corneal radii.
   •   Measuring the eye with the IOL Master takes less time than using ultrasound, the traditional form of measurement that requires eyedrop anesthesia.

The Heidelberg Retina Tomograph (HRT)

The HRT uses a special laser to take 3-dimensional photographs of the optic nerve and surrounding retina. It allows diagnosis of glaucoma seven years earlier than with traditional techniques of diagnosis.

This laser, which is not powerful enough to harm the eye, is first focused on the surface of the optic nerve which captures that image. Then it is focused on the layer just below the surface and captures that image. The HRT continues to take images of deeper and deeper layers until the desired depth has been reached. Finally, the instrument takes all these pictures of the layers and puts them together to form a 3-dimentional image of the entire optic nerve.

PeriData

Visual Field Testing and analysis with PeriData software allows Dr.Benjamin to utilize unique statistical methods for analyzing the visual field performance in patients with glaucoma.

PeriData is an essential computer program for every modern eye specialist. It manages all visual field data of our office. The management is comprised of:

   •   Transmission of data from the perimeter to the program PeriData
   •   Data storage on the PC
   •   Data access everywhere in the net
   •   Visualization by informative graphics and analysis
   •   Integration into our electronical medical records

Corneal Topography

Utilized in contact lens fittings and laser vision correction evaluations, which allows contact lenses to be custom fitted in one visit.

Of all the technology currently available, corneal topography provides the most detailed information about the curvature of the cornea. A corneal topographer projects a series of illuminated rings onto the corneal surface, which are reflected back into the instrument. The reflected rings of light are analyzed by very sophisticated computer and software and a topographical map of the cornea is generated. The color topographical map and computerized analysis reveals any distortions of the cornea, such as keratoconus or corneal scarring, as well as the corneal curvature and meridians of astigmatism. The corneal map allows Dr.Benjamin to formulate a "3D" perspective of the cornea's shape. This diagnostic procedure is essential for patients being considered for refractive surgical procedures (such as LASIK) and is helpful with fitting contact lenses and calculating intraocular lens power for cataract surgery.

Paradigm Ocular Blood Flow Analyzer

Why do some patients with normal intraocular pressure still develop normal tension glaucoma? Evidence points towards an abnormality in the ocular blood flow. The Paradigm Ocular Blood Flow Analyzer allows us to evaluate your ocular blood flow and thus predict your lifetime risk of developing glaucoma.

Fast and comprehensive, the Blood Flow Analyzer provides highly accurate and sensitive measurements. The unit is capable of:

   •   Highly accurate serial tonographer
   •   Capable of measuring intraocular blood flow
   •   Automatic, computerized reporting

The Ocular Blood Flow Analyzer provides a fast, clinically proven measurement that improves detection of glaucoma suspects. The BFA assists in the management of glaucoma, and detection of other circulatory abnormalities involving diabetes, retinal and carotid disorders.

It measures ocular blood flow, as well as intraocular pressure, giving a measurable indication of the vascular health of the eye.
