Catalys Laser
Cataract Surgery

The Catalys Laser System is a state-of-the-art laser that makes optimal treatment outcomes possible during cataract surgery. It improves on our already impressive cataract removal techniques, by allowing our doctors to plan and execute every step of cataract surgery with a heightened level of precision.

The Laser

The Catalys Precision Laser System is FDA-approved for performing the corneal incision, capsulotomy and lens fragmentation portions of laser cataract surgery. Additionally, it features a liquid optic interface that gently docks the laser to the eye and minimizes the risk of a rise in intraocular pressure during surgery.

Benefits

  • Virtually no discomfort during the procedure
  • A gentler and easier way to remove cataracts
  • Reduced inflammation and a rapid recovery period
  • A customized procedure featuring advanced 3D imaging
  • A chance that you won’t need corrective lenses after surgery
  • Increase precision, particularly when compared to manual methods

The procedure

Laser cataract surgery with the Catalys Laser System will begin with Dr. Benjamin and his team using the device to create a 3D map of each eye. This map will guide your treatment approach and surgical steps, based on your eye’s unique size and shape. Additionally, this map ensures that your doctor operates on the appropriate areas of the eye, while leaving the rest of the structure untouched.

To begin the actual surgery, Dr. Benjamin will perform a capsulotomy to create precise corneal incisions in the clear capsule that naturally surrounds your eye’s lens. This is important, because it allows him to access and remove the cataract. The Catalys Laser is also helpful in directly addressing the cataract, as it allows your surgeon to break the cataract into smaller pieces using far less ultrasound energy. This may result in a faster recovery period. Once your cataract has been successfully removed, Dr. Benjamin and his team will manually implant your intraocular lens (IOL) before ending the procedure.

Your recovery

Following your cataract surgery with the Catalys Laser, you will most likely be able to return home immediately. During the first few days of recovery, it’s important to follow your aftercare instructions closely to maximize your results and minimize complications. For example, take your eye drops as prescribed, and don’t drive, swim or engage in rigorous activities. Although the healing time will vary depending on your unique circumstances, most patients notice their vison is improved within a few days.

Dr. Benjamin and his team will schedule a series of post-operative appointments with you so they can monitor your progress and ensure that you’re healing properly. These visits are extremely important to the health of your eyes, so be sure to keep them.

Wow, what a huge difference a short 15 minutes makes! Having spent so much of my life helpless without my glasses and inconvenienced by an expensive contacts routine -- suddenly I could see, and with minimal down-time.
