Eating for Good Vision

Your health is generally a reflection of your diet. Nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, lutien, zinc and vitamins C and E may help you avoid age-related eye problems such as cataracts and macular degeneration. You can find these vision preserving nutrients in these foods:

•    Leafy, green vegetables such as spinach, kale, and collards
•    Salmon, tuna and other oily fish
•    Eggs, nuts beans and other non-meat protein sources
•    Oranges, lemons and other citrus fruits or juices

Stop Smoking

Smoking  increases your risk of option nerve damage, cataracts and macular degeneration. Kicking this habit is difficult, but the more times you try to quit, the more likely you are to succeed.

Wear Sunglasses

The proper sunglasses can protect your eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. Too much UV exposure increases your risk of developing cataracts or macular degeneration.
Your sunglasses should block 99% to 100% of both UVA and UVB rays. Polarized lenses can help reduce glare when driving. Contact lenses offer some UV protection, but sunglasses are still a good idea for added protection.

Look Away From the Computer Screen

Looking at your computer screen for prolonged periods of time can cause:
•    Eyestrain
•    Dry Eyes
•    Blurry Vision
•    Trouble focusing at a distance
•    Neck, back and shoulder pain
•    Headaches

Visit Your Eye Doctor Regularly

Everyone, including small children, should have their eyes examined regularly. Eye exams find eye diseases, such as glaucoma, that have no symptoms. Early detection is important with eye disease, as they are easier to treat when caught in early stages. Depending on your age, you should make an appointment for an eye exam every 1-2 years.
