DIABETES: IS THERE A REASON TO BE OPTIMISTIC? YES!
Let me remind you what is bad about diabetes. It increases the chance of loss of vision, heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, amputation of limbs, and complications during childbirth.
And now some positive news for those with type-II diabetes.
New treatments, which consist of a liquid diet and follow-ups monitored by a dietitian, consistently lead not just to a large weight loss, but to a reversal of the disease. It looks pretty simple. 4 times a day, the patient dissolves a packet of powder in water as a soup or drink. The powder contains 200 calories and the proper balance of nutrients.
And if the person abstains from other food long enough (4-5 months), then their type-II diabetes can go away completely.
Yes, the same diabetes that used to be considered irreversible.
The BBC website describes a 65-year-old woman who dropped over 50lbs and no longer needs to take pills for diabetes. Before, she weighed about 200lbs, but now her life has returned, according to her.
All in all, the study involved 298 patients. It seems difficult to endure such a diet, but the subjects were able to cope, saying, “You don’t have to think about what you’re gonna eat.”
What were the results?
- a year after the start of the diet, 46% were in steady remission
- 86% dropped 30lbs or more and are in remission
- in comparison, only 4% of those who use conventional treatment are in remission
It’s too early to say if this method will save millions. If the weight comes back, diabetes will come back with it, and the fact is that’s the last thing a former diabetic wants.
And on that optimistic note, I bid farewell, until the next medical breakthrough.
