5 Tips to Help You See Better in the Digital World

When thinking about how to describe the world we live in one word generally comes to mind: connected. Everywhere we go we’re usually carrying around some sort of device that keeps us connected to something important to us. Whether it’s a tablet, smartphone or a computer that we’re using to stay in touch, we sometimes forget to take into consideration two very important devices that keep us connected to the world better than anything else: our eyes.

Technology can take a toll on our eyes, so here are five important tips to keep in mind while using technology to stay connected.

You can adjust your environment when using these digital devices to help promote healthier eyes. If possible, use a large monitor or screen magnifier to reduce eye strain. Make sure your chair is close to your computer and that the chair has adequate lower-back support.

For extended reading, change your monitor settings to a reflective lighting scheme, but don’t only think about your computer lighting. Good room lighting is also important for healthy eyes. Keep bright lighting overhead to a minimum. Too much lighting overexposes and irritates eyes, while too little causes the eyes to strain in order to see. Keep your desk lamp shining on your desk, not you. Try to keep window light off to the side, rather than in front or behind you. Use blinds and get a glare screen. Position your computer screen to reduce reflections from windows or overhead lights.

Adjust your screen so you look at it slightly downward and are about 24-28 inches away. The center should be about 4-6 inches below your eyes. Also, make sure your screen is large enough and with just the right brightness and contrast so you’re not straining to see text or images clearly. Adjust the screen settings to where they are most comfortable for you.

For anyone with permanently reduced vision, magnifying the text and images on your device will help you avoid straining your eyes from squinting. Almost every device can be adjusted to display larger text, and for those with compromised vision, this can make reading that much easier.

Most devices are set up in a way that makes work virtually non-stop, but you have to remember that you are not a machine. You need to take breaks to recharge, and so do your eyes. An easy rule to remember is the 20-20-20 Rule. It’s easy: every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break, and look at something 20 feet away…and don’t forget to blink! Blinking washes your eyes in naturally therapeutic tears. If you regularly wear glasses, make sure you have proper lenses for the computer.

Каждые 20 минут вы делаете перерыв на 20 секунд, во время которого отводите глаза от бесценного монитора и созерцаете красивый объект в 20 футах от себя. Такой бесхитростный лайфхак заметно расслабляет глазные мышцы.

Подозреваю, что большинство тех, кто знает об этом правиле, о нем успешно забывает. Т.е. правило-то помнит, но забывает ему следовать. И в этом состоит чуть ли не общее правило несколько разбросанной жизни. Поставьте таймер на 20 минут, и его пиканье будет возвращать вас к реальности. Реальность же такова, что длительная работа на компьютере без таких милых антрактов – не скажем губительна, но все же пагубна для глаз. А глаз у вас – не так уж много.

Кстати, тот же метод, называемый 

 (всего лишь «помидор» по-итальянски) используется и в творческой работе, что позволяет совместить полезное с полезным.


Если вас по каким-то причинам не устраивает таймер (хотя о случаях таймерофобии науке неизвестно), то можно загрузить приложения ProtectYourVision или eyeCare. А как оценивать расстояние именно в 20 футов или шагов? Сверхточность не нужна, какое-нибудь дерево или фонарный столб шагах в 20 от вас – вполне сойдут.

Если не вдохновляет фонарный столб, а дерева нет, то можно просто закрывать глаза на 20 секунд. Такая микромедитация благотворно скажется и на состоянии сознания, выхватывая его из информационного шума и внося толику умиротворения.

Еще важно, вы удивитесь, не забывать моргать, а не превращаться в 

 (из мультфильма «Маугли»). Моргание с нормальной частотой – профилактический метод против сухости глаз, поскольку оно стимулирует выработку слезы, проблемы с которой как раз и ведут к сухости.

Не менее важно не превращаться и в «

» из франшизы “Aliens” – инопланетного жителя, сросшегося с креслом. Периодически стоит вставать и ходить.


ЕСТЬ ЛИ ДОКАЗАТЕЛЬСТВА?

Эффективность правила была проверена относительно скромным исследованием в 2013 г., но и его хватило, чтобы Американская академия офтальмологии рекомендовала этот всем доступный трюк как способ снижения переутомления глаз.


КАКОВЫ СИМПТОМЫ ПЕРЕУТОМЛЕНИЯ?

Если вы из тех, кто о правиле упорно забывает, то симптомы вам хорошо известны:

слезятся глаза
затуманенное зрение
сухость глаз
головные боли
покраснение глаз

Плюс длительное нахождение в позе «Наездника» ведет к болям в шее, спине или плече.

ЧТО ЕЩЕ МОЖНО СДЕЛАТЬ

1. Если сухость уже наступила, то глазные капли (лучше без консервантов), могут помочь. Но стоит помнить, что существуют методы куда более эффективные, которые многие испытавшие называют, дословно, «просто фантастическими». Это подлинный, по словам одного голливудского сценариста, 

2. Увеличьте размер шрифта вдвое, и ваши глаза вам скажут спасибо.

3. Подрегулируйте контраст: архичерный текст (в отличие от «Квадрата» Малевича) на ослепительно белом фоне – не лучший вариант. При этом экран должен быть достаточно ярким, чтобы читать не напрягаясь. Если из окна бьет солнце, то ситуация, как вы понимаете, иная, чем вечером.

4. Приглушите блики экрана. Существуют защитные антибликовые экраны для мониторов и для очков. У плоских экранов, кстати, меньше бликов, чем у изогнутых.

5. Вы заранее знали, что это будет сказано, но оно все равно будет сказано: не игнорируйте офтальмолога. Если вам за 50, то раз в полгода с ним стоит повидаться, есть у вас осознаваемые симптомы или нет. А если нет 50, но есть симптомы, то тем более.

Стоит помнить, что причиной напряжения может быть и пошатнувшееся зрение. А если есть проблемы даже и после всех трюков и лайфхаков, то худший путь – прокрастинация, а лучший… раз уж вы заранее знали, не будем повторяться.

⭐️ My review of LASIK after one year ⭐️I told Dr. Benjamin I would do this a while ago, but I kind of feel like it says a lot I have kept this on my checklist for a year. I feel like a year is a good amount of time to review a procedure like this and give my honest thoughts and recommendation.So, let me tell you about my journey to getting LASIK and how I ended up in the amazing care of Dr. Benjamin. After going to an optometrist for years and him advising against LASIK because of my genetically dry eyes, I finally got a second opinion from an ophthalmologist (Dr. Benjamin). I didn’t know the difference between an optometrist vs. opthalmologist, but once I learned it kind of made sense why my optometrist didn’t want me getting LASIK lol. Because he couldn’t sell me on contact lenses or glasses for the foreseeable future if I got my vision corrected :) I mean, who knows, but I am glad I got a second opinion.I figured being in Los Angeles with some of the best doctors in the world… if anyone is going to touch my big, blue eyeballs, might as well get it done while I’m here. I found this business due to the reviews and they seemed to really know what they were doing and how to talk to clients.Upon meeting Dr. Benjamin he told me that I wasn’t a candidate for LASIK with my dry eyes, but he could put me through treatments for dry eyes and reevaluate after; and that these treatments had a good success rate for most.So, I started doing two treatments every other week for about 2.5 months - IPL laser treatment and Lipiflow. Lipiflow, especially, was a weird painless experience but highly recommend anyone with dry eyes to ask about it regardless of LASIK. I could tell my eyes felt way less dry a couple days after each treatment. There are videos on YouTube that talk about this treatment… Who knew this stuff existed. I’m not gonna lie, it’s an investment to do all these treatments on top of LASIK, but my eyes rarely feel dry anymore so if you’re going to get it done - do it right.Finally, I was approved for LASIK. I ended up waiting until the end of year to make sure I saved up the funds to do it and had some time to heal. I also took advantage of an end of year deal they were offering. $1000 off was a pretty nice forcing function to get me to finally do it after prepping my eyes with the treatments. The procedure itself I couldn’t feel anything even though I was awake the entire time (medicated). Even the scary part when bubbles form on your eyes Dr. Benjamin let me know about in advance so when it happened I just went with the flow. I think the worst part was the recovery the few days after and coming home drugged up lol. I remember day 1 thinking omg what did I do to my eyes. My eyes just hurt and felt weird, but omg I could see 20/15 immediately. And then, day by day it gradually got better. It took a few weeks for my eyes to heal, but after 1 month you couldn’t even tell I had surgery. One eye was a bit more bloodshot than the other.I can see 20/15. It’s been life changing for the past year not having to worry about contacts or glasses. I just got married and was able to walk down the aisle with clear vision. I only wish I had the means to have done this earlier in life. If you’re considering it - do it! And definitely consider Dr. Benjamin to do it right.Lastly, to continue treating my dry eyes, Dr. Benjamin gave me an extra LipiFlow treatment, and also recommended I try punctal plugs (painless plugs inserted into your lids that help your tears last longer). He placed the plugs in my eyes under 5 mins. Wild.I heard from people during the LASIK process they have been nervous to get the procedure so I wrote this to help and because I think highly of this business for changing my life. And, some of the dry eye treatments I would’ve never known about had it not been for them. Again, I wish I would have had been able to do this years ago. It is so, so worth it!Thank you, Dr. Benjamin (and staff!)

Concerned about a reoccurring virus, I text Dr Benjamin’s office first thing in the morning seeking immediate advice and an appointment. In quick time I received both sage advice and a same day appointment. Dr B takes a personal interest in his patients well being and has diligent, competent and attentive staff to support the care and support needed. Can’t speak highly enough.
