Today, I’d like to touch on a topic far from the realm of science.

I don’t like to brag, but I often hear from patients, “Doctor, your employees always smiling, warm-hearted, and at the same time very knowledgeable. What’s the secret?”

I answer that even the most pristine office, without the right people, is just a pile of metal. The basis of a successful practice isn’t the newest laser technology or diagnostic systems, which cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. It isn’t the microscopes or smart machines. Furthermore, not even a good doctor is enough. Our people and our team are an extension of our families; this is what it comes down to. On my team, the average level of experience is 6 years, but there are some who have been with us for 20. And although some younger staff members leave to move on in their careers, a strong backbone remains.

On Sunday night, you always overhear, “Oh my gosh, the weekend is almost over…. Another Monday is on its way”. I do everything to make sure that our people do not feel this way. They know there are kind, friendly coworkers waiting for them every Monday, and many interesting things to do.

But what is the secret, in less general terms? The tone is set from above. And what makes a team of professionals? It isn’t just people that are well put-together, with “BEI” written next to their name. Patients notice that the equipment is always cleansed with alcohol, our hands are always washed, and the employees are always friendly. Where do we find people like this? The secret is simple and everyone knows it. Or maybe almost everyone and they pretend to forget.

In order for people to love their work and happily show up every Monday, you have to give them the possibility of growth. This includes the chance to build upon their skills and get paid well for doing it. But even that isn’t enough. It’s necessary to create a standard for working conditions.

Many of our female employees have families and children. We try to organize everything so that they have enough time to spend with their parents (whom they may take care of), and their children, who from time to time need to have some fun. To keep things going smoothly, workers need to feel confident and calm.

That’s why, when you come into our office, you sometimes don’t see the person that you’re used to. In addition to good pay, we have other benefits, as well. We are one of the few practices in the city that provide our employees with medical insurance.

If someone at work worries about their own health how can they possibly concern themselves with the well-being of our patients? Therefore, we have a pension plan, as well, into which we actively invest money.

No, there is more. Twice a year, our people go to conferences and interact with colleagues. Everyone has their own level – doctors with doctors, tech staff with other tech staff. They listen to lectures from experts and learn from experience. All this requires investment. Sometimes, employees are offered jobs with other offices, but they stay here. Why? I’d venture to say it’s because they feel good here.

But now let’s think of something else. Why do we do it? In order for us to have all our ducks in a row, it’s not just about the smartest and most accurate machines. It also has to do with psychology. When a person goes to the doctor, they’re already nervous. So if they see a kind face and feel well taken care of, it becomes easier. Our employees aren’t worried about their health or how to pay their bills. Therefore, they’re thinking about your problems and not their own.

Everything I described is done just for you – the patient. But I don’t want to paint a perfectly idyllic picture. There are times when someone says, “It’s so expensive… they must have crystal chandeliers in there”.

Our unique laser room with microclimate, glasses from the best companies in the world, the knowledge, skills, fantastic technology, and relationships – this is a huge investment. We don’t have chandeliers or empire-style furniture, but there is a thoughtful allocation of resources. Just remember that you only have one set of eyes. They are invaluable and deserve the best care possible.

The secret is that we are focused on the patient and not on ourselves. Everyone wins, though. Come see us, and we will always help in any way that we can, and we are capable of so many things.

Не люблю хвастаться, но не могу не похвалиться: нередко слышу от пациента такой примерно комментарий: «Доктор, мне так нравятся все ваши сотрудники! Улыбчивые,  участливые и в то же время такие знающие. И у вас всегда чистота, и так тихо, спокойно, что чувствуешь себя, как на курорте. Иногда приходится ждать, хотя и недолго, но всегда ощущаешь, что тебе рады. В чем секрет?»

И я отвечаю в том духе, что даже самый сверкающий офис без людей – просто груда металла. Основа нашей успешной практики – не только и даже не столько новейшая лазерная техника или диагностическая аппаратура, которая стоит сотни тысяч долларов, не микроскопы и не умные машины. Более того, недостаточно даже умного доктора. Никто не может лечить в одиночку.  Люди, команда, которая для каждого из нас – продолжение семьи, – вот куда сделан главный вклад. В моей команде средний стаж работы – 6 лет, но есть и такие, кто с нами уже 20 лет. Понятно, что некоторые молодые уходят, продвигаясь в своем карьерном росте, но костяк сохраняется.

В воскресенье, бывает, сидишь у кого-то в гостях, и многие стонут: «Ой, завтра опять понедельник, неужели кончился уикенд, снова тащиться на работу…».  Я делаю все, чтобы наши люди так не стонали. Они знают, что в понедельник их ждет добрый, дружный коллектив и интересные дела.

Но в чем секрет, если отойти от общих слов? Нужно признать, что тон задается сверху. Что есть команда профессионалов? Это же не просто люди в хорошей форме, на которой написано Benjamin Eye Institute. Внимательные пациенты замечают, что оборудование всегда протирается спиртом, что руки всегда моются, что сотрудники всегда доброжелательны.  Где взять таких людей? Секрет прост до банальности, и его все знают. Или почти все, просто некоторые делают вид, что забыли.

Чтобы люди любили свою работу, чтобы даже в понедельник приходили с удовольствием, нужно им дать возможность роста, возможность наращивать мастерство, и нужно им ХОРОШО ПЛАТИТЬ. Но даже этого мало. Нужно создавать нормальные условия для работы.

Многие из наших девушек имеют семьи, детей. И мы стараемся организовать все так, чтобы они могли проводить достаточное время с семьей, с родителями, которым они помогают, с детьми, которых периодически нужно возить на разные аттракционы. Чтобы все шло гладко, работники должны чувствовать себя уверенно и спокойно.

Вот почему, когда вы приходите в наш офис, вы иногда не видите тех людей, к которым привыкли. Помимо хорошей оплаты, у нас в ходу и другие бенефиты. Мы – одна из не так уж и часто встречающихся практик в этом городе, в которой работникам дается медицинская страховка.

Если человек на работе думает не о пациенте, а о том, как же он будет существовать в старости, – найдутся ли у него моральные силы, чтобы быть вежливым и сконцентрированным? Поэтому у нашей команды есть еще и пенсионный план, в который мы активно вкладываем деньги из практики.

НА ЭТОМ ВСЕ, СЕКРЕТ ИСЧЕРПАН?

Нет, есть еще кое-что. Дважды в год наши люди ездят на конференции, где встречаются с коллегами. Каждый на своем уровне: я – с врачами, технический персонал – соответственно.  Слушают лекции экспертов, перенимают опыт. И все это тоже требует инвестиций.  Понятно, что работники получают порой предложения «перебежать» куда-то. Но они остаются. Почему? Рискну предположить: потому что им здесь хорошо.

А теперь подумаем о другом.  Для чего все это делается? Для того, чтобы у нас все было в ажуре не только в плане умнейших и точнейших машин, но и в плане психологии.  Когда человек приходит к врачу, он и так уже нервничает, беспокоится о том, что его ждет. И если он при этом видит доброе лицо и чувствует, что к нему здесь относятся предельно внимательно, то ему уже от этого факта становится легче. Так что никаких великих тайн.  Сотрудники не тревожатся о своем здоровье и не предаются вечным думам о том, как им заплатить за текущие расходы, когда они обследуют пациента. И потому в этот важный для вас момент они думают о ваших проблемах, а  не о своих.

Все, что я описал, в конечном итоге делается для вас – наших пациентов. Я не хочу рисовать пасторальную картинку. Бывает, что кто-то, не вникая ни в какие детали, начинает говорить что-то типа: «У них все так дорого, потому что у них там хрустальные люстры висят».

Те же, кто у нас был, понимают,  что все лучшее, что они видят – уникальный лазерный зал с микроклиматом, очки лучших компаний мира, знания, умения, фантастическая технология, отношения, – все это дается огромным вкладом. К тому же нет у нас никаких хрустальных люстр или мебели ампир, а есть продуманное распределение ресурсов. Просто стоит помнить о том, что у вас  лишь пара глаз, они бесценны и достойны самого лучшего сервиса, который только возможен.

Итак, секрет состоит в том, что мы сфокусированы на пациенте, а не на себе. Но в результате хорошо всем. Приходите, и мы всегда поможем чем можем. А можем мы многое.

⭐️ My review of LASIK after one year ⭐️I told Dr. Benjamin I would do this a while ago, but I kind of feel like it says a lot I have kept this on my checklist for a year. I feel like a year is a good amount of time to review a procedure like this and give my honest thoughts and recommendation.So, let me tell you about my journey to getting LASIK and how I ended up in the amazing care of Dr. Benjamin. After going to an optometrist for years and him advising against LASIK because of my genetically dry eyes, I finally got a second opinion from an ophthalmologist (Dr. Benjamin). I didn’t know the difference between an optometrist vs. opthalmologist, but once I learned it kind of made sense why my optometrist didn’t want me getting LASIK lol. Because he couldn’t sell me on contact lenses or glasses for the foreseeable future if I got my vision corrected :) I mean, who knows, but I am glad I got a second opinion.I figured being in Los Angeles with some of the best doctors in the world… if anyone is going to touch my big, blue eyeballs, might as well get it done while I’m here. I found this business due to the reviews and they seemed to really know what they were doing and how to talk to clients.Upon meeting Dr. Benjamin he told me that I wasn’t a candidate for LASIK with my dry eyes, but he could put me through treatments for dry eyes and reevaluate after; and that these treatments had a good success rate for most.So, I started doing two treatments every other week for about 2.5 months - IPL laser treatment and Lipiflow. Lipiflow, especially, was a weird painless experience but highly recommend anyone with dry eyes to ask about it regardless of LASIK. I could tell my eyes felt way less dry a couple days after each treatment. There are videos on YouTube that talk about this treatment… Who knew this stuff existed. I’m not gonna lie, it’s an investment to do all these treatments on top of LASIK, but my eyes rarely feel dry anymore so if you’re going to get it done - do it right.Finally, I was approved for LASIK. I ended up waiting until the end of year to make sure I saved up the funds to do it and had some time to heal. I also took advantage of an end of year deal they were offering. $1000 off was a pretty nice forcing function to get me to finally do it after prepping my eyes with the treatments. The procedure itself I couldn’t feel anything even though I was awake the entire time (medicated). Even the scary part when bubbles form on your eyes Dr. Benjamin let me know about in advance so when it happened I just went with the flow. I think the worst part was the recovery the few days after and coming home drugged up lol. I remember day 1 thinking omg what did I do to my eyes. My eyes just hurt and felt weird, but omg I could see 20/15 immediately. And then, day by day it gradually got better. It took a few weeks for my eyes to heal, but after 1 month you couldn’t even tell I had surgery. One eye was a bit more bloodshot than the other.I can see 20/15. It’s been life changing for the past year not having to worry about contacts or glasses. I just got married and was able to walk down the aisle with clear vision. I only wish I had the means to have done this earlier in life. If you’re considering it - do it! And definitely consider Dr. Benjamin to do it right.Lastly, to continue treating my dry eyes, Dr. Benjamin gave me an extra LipiFlow treatment, and also recommended I try punctal plugs (painless plugs inserted into your lids that help your tears last longer). He placed the plugs in my eyes under 5 mins. Wild.I heard from people during the LASIK process they have been nervous to get the procedure so I wrote this to help and because I think highly of this business for changing my life. And, some of the dry eye treatments I would’ve never known about had it not been for them. Again, I wish I would have had been able to do this years ago. It is so, so worth it!Thank you, Dr. Benjamin (and staff!)

Concerned about a reoccurring virus, I text Dr Benjamin’s office first thing in the morning seeking immediate advice and an appointment. In quick time I received both sage advice and a same day appointment. Dr B takes a personal interest in his patients well being and has diligent, competent and attentive staff to support the care and support needed. Can’t speak highly enough.

Been going to Dr B for nearly a decade after trying many other eye doctors in LA.  Beyond solving my chronic dry eye and being the most knowledgeable, he is an all-around great guy and spends time educating. The staff is wonderful as well.

The ophthalmologist that performed my surgery, Dr. Benjamin, was extremely skilled and knowledgeable. He took the time to thoroughly explain the procedure and answer all of my questions. I felt confident in his abilities and knew that I was in good hands.

Dr Benjamin and his team are extremely professional. I had Lasik surgery performed by him and his team and everything to date has gone exactly as described to me. Front office is very friendly and scheduling appointments is easy.

The surgeons at Benjamin Eye Institute are true experts in their field - they were able to explain the procedure in detail and answer all of my questions and concerns. The surgery itself was quick and painless, and the recovery was much faster than I had anticipated.

I just completed my first visit and can say that this office deserves every high ranking it gets. The staff are efficient, friendly but highly professional.  The office is modern and sparkling clean. The front desk was communicative and everyone up to the doctor was beyond detailed in their care. I can’t ever express my deep gratitude for Dr . Dr Benjamin and Alba were great. He is very professional, kind and with clear explanations. I had an eyelid quick surgery and I’m just missing the glasses prescription, I left the office and forgot to ask for it. But he and his team were amazing!
