Part of this analysis happens while the patient is waiting?

Yes, they sit there and think, “They’ve forgotten about me,” but meanwhile one or two employees are working only on them.  Then the doctor comes and they start to think, “Sigizmund came after me and has already left, but I’m still here for some reason.”  Yes, one person has finished while another is still there, but this is because people have different illnesses of a different severity.

Then why with this fictitious Doctor N is everything so quick and efficient?  Tsk-tsk!

Well, that’s a doctor for whom you’re just a checkmark, come and gone.  We are really anxious for these patients.  For us, the reputation of giving people great results is more important than turning them out on a conveyor belt.  And yes, sometimes there is that feeling that there are a lot of people here and it’s kind of chaotic, but it’s actually a well-oiled machine.  In order to do quality, meaningful work, the principle of flying by the seat of your pants isn’t the best possible method.  Sometimes we even have to repeat the same tests.

I’ve heard that after an exhausting workday you come home, and instead of relaxing with your family, you’re still writing charts until midnight.  

The bulk of the preliminary and final work happens behind-the-scenes.  A movie gets filmed, but then it takes a long time to edit.  After everyone is gone, the doctor continues to work with the data from your visit, so that we can work accurately and intelligently on your next visit.  And when you come again, my function is to determine our common goal, whether that’s visual acuity, improvement of retinopathy, a decrease in intraocular pressure, improvement of the field of vision, why you have dry eyes, etc.  In short, we figure out if the treatment method worked out like we planned.  You aren’t always able to achieve the desired result in one fell swoop.  Sometimes you have to try drops before opting for stronger methods, or change medications that aren’t seemingly related to your eyes, or go to another type of specialist.  And often an additional analysis of the situation occurs after the patient has already left.

I have this perception that there are patients who, to put it lightly, are indifferent to the technical equipment and the qualifications of the doctor and their team, because “all doctors are about the same, so the best ones are the fastest.”  Is that true?

Yes, and, “Doctor, I don’t need all this!  I’m fed up.  I’m going somewhere else.”  And really they just go to whoever is the fastest, but within a few months or years the problems return, already very difficult to solve but sometimes too late.  In this case, the question “Why does it take so long?” negates itself.  You always need to check out the office of any doctor to see what the staff is like, the equipment, and look at the doctor’s diplomas.  It affects your life, or at least the quality of your life.  We have a reputation with people for always going the extra mile.   You could use a retinal camera from 20 years ago, but no, we spend hundreds of thousands of dollars in order to have the latest cameras and most exact data, and this offers the best results.

So the patient, unaware that what’s going on, sits there bored.  And like everyone else who doesn’t like to read on their phone, I get it.  If there were karaoke and movies, it’d be a piece of cake.  

Yes, and that’s the thing with modern ophthalmology – it isn’t a piece of cake.  I, for example, am not an optometrist.  I cannot do all the work.  People come in and say, “Give me glasses.  I’m not interested in anything else.”  I’m sorry, no.  If you come to me, I have a responsibility to treat your optic nerve, your early-stage cataracts, and many other things, and if we don’t honestly examine your eyes, that’s simply negligence.  Therefore, when you go to the ophthalmologist, be it once every three months or six – please, at least take care of yourself.  The time you spend in the office is time that we spend on you.

– А почему  у доктора Папоротникова, как я его назвал, все так быстро и споро? Чик-чик!

– Ну есть же доктора, которые просто ставят галочки: пришел-ушел. У нас же те, кто хорошо знает доктора, уже в курсе, что он не делает ненужных тестов или тем более ненужных операций. Мы действительно болеем за своих пациентов. И нам важнее репутация людей, достигающих хороших результатов, чем слава скоростного конвейера. Да, иногда возникает такое ощущение: много народу,  какой-то хаос… На самом деле это хорошо отлаженный механизм. Чтобы все сделать качественно, чтобы работа была осмысленной, принцип «с бухты-барахты» – не лучшее, что может быть. Бывает даже, что приходится тот же тест повторять.

– Слыхал, что после изнурительного рабочего дня вы приходите домой и вместо человеческого отдыха с семьей еще пишете до полуночи какие-то чарты?

–  Масса работы, как предварительной, так и завершающей, происходит за кулисами прямого контакта с больным. Кино сняли – потом его нужно долго монтировать, не так ли?

– В моем случае монтаж, т.е. редактирование текста, занимает больше времени, чем запись.

– После того, как все уже ушли, доктор продолжает работу по данным визита, чтобы в следующий ваш приход мы работали четко и осмысленно. И когда вы придете, моя функция – определить, была ли достигнута наша общая цель, будь то острота зрения, улучшение ситуации с ретинопатией, понижение давления, улучшение поля зрения, что там с сухостью глаз и пр. Одним словом, сработал ли метод лечения так, как мы планировали.

– Ты не всегда можешь достичь желаемого одним прыжком. Иногда нужно попробовать капли прежде чем прибегать к более сильным методам, или поменять лекарство, которое к глазам, казалось бы, не имеет отношения, или послать к врачу другой специальности – и часто дополнительный анализ ситуации происходит, когда пациент уже ушел.

– У меня такое ощущение, что существуют пациенты, которым, скажем печатно, безразлична техническая оснащенность и уровень квалификации врача и его команды,  поскольку «все  врачи одинаково счастливы – и лучше тот, у которого все быстро». Встречались?

– Ну… есть и такие: «Доктор, мне все это не надо! Надоело. Я пойду к другому». И действительно идут к кому-то очень быстрому, но через несколько месяцев или даже лет возвращаются с проблемой, решить которую уже очень сложно, а иногда и невозможно. В этом случае вопрос  «

» как-то теряет остроту. В офисе любого врача всегда нужно смело осматриваться. Посмотрите, какие там сотрудники, какая аппаратура, не поленитесь взглянуть на дипломы врача, ведь от всего этого может зависеть ваша жизнь или качество жизни как минимум. У нас репутация людей, которые никогда не останавливаются на достигнутом. Могли бы, скажем, использовать камеру для фотографирования сетчатки 20-летней давности, так нет, мы тратим сотни тысяч долларов, чтобы у нас была новейшая камера, точнейшие данные, а с ними и лучшие результаты.

– Итак, пациент, будучи в неведенье, что им занимаются “за его спиной”, сидит и скучает? Как всякий, кто не любит читать “Войну и мир” с телефона, я его понимаю. А были бы караоке, кино, семечки, 

 и было бы другое дело. Ждать стало бы веселее.

– В том и дело, что современная офтальмология – не семечки. Я, к примеру, не оптометрист, я не могу делать все работы, включая жарку семечек. Бывает, кто-то приходит и говорит: «Дайте мне очки, а больше меня ничего не интересует!». Простите, нет. Раз вы пришли ко мне, у меня перед вами ответственность – и за ваш зрительный нерв, и за, возможно, начинающуюся катаракту, и за многое другое, и если мы не проверим ваши глаза с присущей нам доскональностью,  то это будет просто халатность, нет? Поэтому, когда вы идете к офтальмологу, будь то раз в три месяца или в шесть, пожалуйста  – хотя бы минимально позаботьтесь о себе. Время, которое вы тратите в офисе, – это время, потраченное на вас.

⭐️ My review of LASIK after one year ⭐️I told Dr. Benjamin I would do this a while ago, but I kind of feel like it says a lot I have kept this on my checklist for a year. I feel like a year is a good amount of time to review a procedure like this and give my honest thoughts and recommendation.So, let me tell you about my journey to getting LASIK and how I ended up in the amazing care of Dr. Benjamin. After going to an optometrist for years and him advising against LASIK because of my genetically dry eyes, I finally got a second opinion from an ophthalmologist (Dr. Benjamin). I didn’t know the difference between an optometrist vs. opthalmologist, but once I learned it kind of made sense why my optometrist didn’t want me getting LASIK lol. Because he couldn’t sell me on contact lenses or glasses for the foreseeable future if I got my vision corrected :) I mean, who knows, but I am glad I got a second opinion.I figured being in Los Angeles with some of the best doctors in the world… if anyone is going to touch my big, blue eyeballs, might as well get it done while I’m here. I found this business due to the reviews and they seemed to really know what they were doing and how to talk to clients.Upon meeting Dr. Benjamin he told me that I wasn’t a candidate for LASIK with my dry eyes, but he could put me through treatments for dry eyes and reevaluate after; and that these treatments had a good success rate for most.So, I started doing two treatments every other week for about 2.5 months - IPL laser treatment and Lipiflow. Lipiflow, especially, was a weird painless experience but highly recommend anyone with dry eyes to ask about it regardless of LASIK. I could tell my eyes felt way less dry a couple days after each treatment. There are videos on YouTube that talk about this treatment… Who knew this stuff existed. I’m not gonna lie, it’s an investment to do all these treatments on top of LASIK, but my eyes rarely feel dry anymore so if you’re going to get it done - do it right.Finally, I was approved for LASIK. I ended up waiting until the end of year to make sure I saved up the funds to do it and had some time to heal. I also took advantage of an end of year deal they were offering. $1000 off was a pretty nice forcing function to get me to finally do it after prepping my eyes with the treatments. The procedure itself I couldn’t feel anything even though I was awake the entire time (medicated). Even the scary part when bubbles form on your eyes Dr. Benjamin let me know about in advance so when it happened I just went with the flow. I think the worst part was the recovery the few days after and coming home drugged up lol. I remember day 1 thinking omg what did I do to my eyes. My eyes just hurt and felt weird, but omg I could see 20/15 immediately. And then, day by day it gradually got better. It took a few weeks for my eyes to heal, but after 1 month you couldn’t even tell I had surgery. One eye was a bit more bloodshot than the other.I can see 20/15. It’s been life changing for the past year not having to worry about contacts or glasses. I just got married and was able to walk down the aisle with clear vision. I only wish I had the means to have done this earlier in life. If you’re considering it - do it! And definitely consider Dr. Benjamin to do it right.Lastly, to continue treating my dry eyes, Dr. Benjamin gave me an extra LipiFlow treatment, and also recommended I try punctal plugs (painless plugs inserted into your lids that help your tears last longer). He placed the plugs in my eyes under 5 mins. Wild.I heard from people during the LASIK process they have been nervous to get the procedure so I wrote this to help and because I think highly of this business for changing my life. And, some of the dry eye treatments I would’ve never known about had it not been for them. Again, I wish I would have had been able to do this years ago. It is so, so worth it!Thank you, Dr. Benjamin (and staff!)

Concerned about a reoccurring virus, I text Dr Benjamin’s office first thing in the morning seeking immediate advice and an appointment. In quick time I received both sage advice and a same day appointment. Dr B takes a personal interest in his patients well being and has diligent, competent and attentive staff to support the care and support needed. Can’t speak highly enough.

Been going to Dr B for nearly a decade after trying many other eye doctors in LA.  Beyond solving my chronic dry eye and being the most knowledgeable, he is an all-around great guy and spends time educating. The staff is wonderful as well.
