WHAT IS AMNIOTIC MEMBRANE

Amniotic membrane is part of the placenta that surrounds a baby throughout pregnancy. Its natural biological properties help restore damaged eye tissue:

  • Reduces inflammation — decreases swelling and corneal irritation
  • Prevents scarring — preserves corneal clarity
  • Stimulates healing — accelerates cell restoration
The membrane is thin and transparent — like a tissue on the eye's surface. It gently protects damaged cells throughout the treatment course.
DONOR TISSUE SAFETY

Tissue is obtained from healthy mothers following elective cesarean sections. Every sample undergoes rigorous multi-step FDA quality control: medical screening, infection testing, and lifestyle review. The tissue bank is accredited and fully regulated by the FDA.

WHAT TO EXPECT

DEVICE Prokera Slim resembles a large contact lens. You may feel the ring holder but there should be no pain.

PLACEMENT Dr. Benjamin places the device in the office. The eyelid may be taped for optimal membrane-to-cornea contact.

WEAR The device is worn for 3–5 days continuously. Do not remove it yourself.

REMOVAL Dr. Benjamin will remove Prokera at your follow-up visit. Normal activities may resume immediately.

WHAT TO AVOID

▸ Do not rub your eye or touch the device ▸ Do not swim or submerge your eye ▸ Do not drive — vision and depth perception are altered ▸ Use eye drops exactly as prescribed

IMPORTANT RULES WHILE WEARING PROKERA

Do not remove Prokera yourself — only with the doctor's permission. Do not rub your eyes or squeeze them tightly. Shower with eye tightly closed. No swimming or hot tub. Contact us immediately for discomfort, redness, swelling, or discharge.
